Rural Alberta Community Health Professional Attraction and Retention

Founded in 2007 as the Alberta Rural Community Physician Attraction and Retention Award, this Rhapsody Award recognizes a rural Alberta community that has developed innovative and collaborative approaches to successfully attract and retain health-care professional(s) in their area.

This Rhapsody Award recognizes a rural Alberta community that has developed innovative and collaborative approaches to successfully attract and retain health-care professional(s) in their area. Communities can nominate themselves or be nominated by others. To be eligible, communities cannot have received an RPAP/ RhPAP or Rhapsody Award in the last six (6) years.

Manning Physician Attraction and Retention Coalition

Described  as “the phoenix rising from the ashes,” the 2016 recipient of the Alberta Rural Community Physician Attraction and Retention Award bounced back from a situation where the region went from being served by locum physicians—or none at all—to having three physicians now practising in the community.

2015

Bonnyville Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee 

In the spring of 2014, the Bonnyville community was facing a crisis. The loss of five physicians in quick succession left the community facing potential service disruptions, ER coverage shortages, and the possible closure of the obstetrics program.

At the urging of Alberta Health Services, and with the assistance of RPAP | Health Workforce for Alberta, the Bonnyville Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee was formed.

Vegreville Region Physician Attraction and Retention Committee

By 2004, a family doctor was hard to come by in Vegreville. The community was down to three physicians, a drastic decrease from a peak of eight in previous years.  New physicians were difficult to recruit, and it was becoming difficult to retain the existing physician group. Those doctors who remained were not accepting new patients. Many community members had begun seeing physicians outside of the community, which started to impact local businesses.
