Once again, a delegation from Western Canada travelled across the pond to Dublin, Ireland as part of a physician recruitment mission.  Even though the shepherd’s pie and Irish beef stew were to die for, the main focuses of the trip were physician recruitment and connecting with our Canadian students who are studying medicine abroad.

The four Western provinces sent delegations to Ireland who met with over 60 Canadian medical students for a two hours collaborative presentation and Q & A session.  Alberta’s David Kay facilitated a panel discussion which included representatives from all four provinces. The students listened raptly as the possibilities of returning home to practice were discussed and then participated in a lively Q & A period.

All four provinces brought some goodies from home for the students including some Tim Horton’s coffee!  The students had to work for it though in a friendly game of Western Canadian trivia and almost everyone walked away with something! Even though there was a tease about hockey tickets, they didn’t materialize. (We will have to follow up with our BC colleagues about that!)

The Alberta group—David Kay, Dr. Kate Reed, Rebecca Stewart and Kimberley MacKinnon—spent the second evening in Dublin in small group  information sessions with Irish doctors who are considering a move to live and practice in Alberta.

What a great group of doctors!  Their questions varied: the weather, cost of living, practice autonomy, remuneration and licensing were popular themes.

Now we are busy with the follow up. We have made contact and the interest is high. Now, it’s time to find them the right opportunity and get them here.

Qualified employers and job seekers are encouraged to check out and register on the new, provincial recruitment website: www.APLJobs.ca.
