Congratulations to Dr. Ernest P. Janzen of Lethbridge, a recipient of the 2016 Specialist of the Year award from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Dr. Janzen, who has enjoyed a 31-year career General Internal Medicine, with an emphasis in Cardiology and Critical Care, was recognized as the top specialist for British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories on March 10 at a ceremony in Lethbridge.

The Royal College’s Specialist of the Year award recognizes specialists who have made significant contributions in providing outstanding care to their patients and the community in which they practice.

In a media release from Alberta Health Services, Dr. Janzen says the honour would not have been possible without his mentors and teachers, or without the daily collaboration and interaction with his colleagues, residents, nurses and students.

“They have offered insights, encouragement and comradery, which eased the inevitable rigours of a demanding career,” Dr. Janzen says. “The biggest reward, however, has been the interaction with patients whose well-being, in the end, is the ultimate aim of this most gratifying vocation.”

Dr. Jack Regehr, Medical Director in the South Zone of Alberta Health Services, calls Dr. Janzen’s work ethic “extraordinary” and says he’s universally respected by colleagues, patients and families. Dr. Janzen’s colleagues at the Chinook Regional Hospital agree.

“I often see him doing rounds late in the evening,” says Dr. A.J. Gomes. “He is a thoughtful and caring internist who is often called upon to see the most difficult and complex cases for a second opinion. I have never encountered a patient who has been unsatisfied with his care.”

Adds Dr. Richard Buck: “He knows his patients’ conditions and knows his patients by name. He has incredible knowledge, a phenomenal memory and perhaps, more importantly, he truly cares.”

Dr. Janzen has practised in southern Alberta for the past 31 years. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta (U of A) in 1979 and completed an internship and second year pre-licensure studies at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, followed by an Internal Medicine residency at the U of A.
